11 Sep VOCABULARY SKILLS FOR SCHOOLS

Our experience in hundreds of classrooms shows that many pupils are held back by weak vocabulary skills even when at university. Some simple steps to change how you introduce new words in the classroom can equip your pupils with vocabulary skills for life.
This very entertaining and fascinating one-hour training looks at how and why pupils do not make connections between ‘related’ words like ‘equals’ and ‘equation’ and how they can be confused by words with multiple meanings – like ‘pitch’. It grew out of a moment in a classroom when Adrian Gray noticed that students did not connect words like ‘fluency’ and ‘effluent’ or understand that the same words used in different subjects might have the same or associated meanings. Pupils who do not grasp these fundamental vocabulary skills find technical Tier 3 words an increasing challenge in subjects like Science where, if you have the right vocabulary skills, you can learn to ‘decode’ new words.
This is training for the whole staff covering the full curriculum. After an hour, it ends with some simple practical steps every teacher can take. But it is also great fun with plenty of interaction for all your subject leaders as we explore some confusing words and where they came from! It is also ideal as a one-off and enlightening session at conferences. £150 for a whole school virtual session – contact us for a price for in-school training.
